Exams & Cleanings

All parents want the best for their children. By partnering with our office, you can help ensure your kids enjoy the benefits of optimal oral health and a beautiful smile.

Routine Checkups and Professional Cleanings

While good oral hygiene, a nutritious diet, and a healthy lifestyle are essential for good oral health, your child also needs routine dental checkups and professional cleanings to ensure their smile remains in tip-top condition. With regular checkups, your child will become more and more comfortable in the dental office and the process of receiving care. Remember, effective dental routines established when your child is young help provide a strong foundation for maintaining a lifetime of good oral health.

Recommended Frequency of Visits

The American Dental Association advises parents to bring their kids in for a routine checkup and preventive care once every six months.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

At each exam visit, our office will review your child’s medical and dental history, examine their teeth and all the surrounding soft tissues, and check the bite and jaw growth. We may recommend select digital imaging to assess the development and position of unerupted teeth, gum health, check for decay or infection, and evaluate the jaws and surrounding anatomy. We’ll also note any signs of dental disease, a malocclusion, tongue or swallowing issues, dental injuries, or other problems that may affect oral health and require monitoring or timely care.

Professional Cleanings

When your child is old enough, we perform a professional dental cleaning to eliminate any plaque or debris that has accumulated between the teeth or in hard-to-reach places. By gently cleaning your child’s smile around the teeth and gums, we reduce the presence of harmful bacteria that, if left in place, can cause cavities and gum disease. We’ll also provide age-appropriate oral hygiene instructions and dietary guidance to help keep your child’s smile healthy and bright. As an added level of protection from tooth decay, we may recommend a topical fluoride treatment and the application of dental sealants.

The Importance of Routine Care

To help keep your child's smile healthy and bright, we recommend checkups twice a year. In this way, we can examine your child's smile to assess oral health and development as well as check for any emerging conditions. By providing preventive care and treatment for any issues early in their onset, we can help your child enjoy the benefits of optimal oral health.
